Prep girls basketball: Mountlake Terrace 59, Everett 49

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Mountlake Terrace got a big third quarter run and overcame early foul trouble from leading scorer Samantha Romanowski to beat Everett 59-49 in a Wesco 3A game on Tuesday night.

Romanowski scored a game-high 26 points, despite earning her fourth foul early in the third quarter. With Romanowski out the Hawks looked to junior guard Shaiam Pagaling and senior forward Nikkie Froehlich for leadership. Mountlake Terrace outscored the Seagulls 21-8 with Romanowski on the bench for a majority of the period.

“There’s been a couple game this season where (Romanowski) has gotten into foul trouble,” said Hawks head coach Zach Wilde. “With Sam on the bench we stepped up. It was just like when she fouled out against Edmonds-Woodway, we did the same thing. Our players know that when she’s out it’s their time.”

With the defensive focus being on Sidney and Darian Rielly, coach Wilde knew that his squad would have to move away from the defensive pressure they had been using most of the season.

“We knew we had to play a different kind of D,” Wilde said. “When they have the ball the Rielly’s are always looking for each other. Knowing that we definitely had to play the most man-to-man we’ve played all year.”
