Fields’ free throws help MP boys hold off Shorewood

MARYSVILLE — Dante Fields hit two key free throws with 30 seconds left to give Marysville Pilchuck a two-possession lead and help the Tomahawks hold on to beat Shorewood 58-54 in a Wesco 3A crossover game on Tuesday night.

Leading Shorewood by a basket, Fields, who finished with eight points and 12 rebounds, hit two free throws to give MP a four-point lead. On the ensuing possession, the Thunderbirds, who outscored the Tomahawks 19-10 in the fourth quarter to rally and make it close, threw a long pass down the court but missed a 3-pointer to seal their fate.

Bryce Juneau had 10 assists for MP and TJ Rice scored 12 points on 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Rice hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter to help MP outscore Shorewood 22-8 and open a 32-20 halftime lead.

“Some of the guys were joking that they found TJ tonight,” said MP head coach Bary Gould on Rice, who struggled to shoot the ball in the first half of this season. “He had a really good summer shooting the ball and we kept believing in him. His threes were big for us.”
