COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — An 8-year-old girl has been taken into protective custody from a northern Idaho home where authorities seized 139 animals.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said investigators acting on a tip on Jan. 14 entered the home in Athol and found it filled with animal feces, garbage and rotting food.
Animal control officers on Jan. 15 went to the home and found animals confined in pens and cages with no water. Authorities took the animals to the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
The sheriff’s office said there are 83 rabbits, 38 guinea pigs, nine goats, four miniature horses, three chickens, a horse and one goose.
Kootenai County Fair General Manager Dane Dugan said the animals appear to be in good condition.
Authorities say charges against the residents of the home are pending.
