PORTLAND ? It all went wrong for the Everett Silvertips in the third period.
The Portland Winterhawks ran riot in the period, breaking open a tight game as the Tips fell 5-1 in Western Hockey League action Friday night.
Portland entered the third period clinging to a 2-1 lead, with Everett having outshot the Winterhawks 20-15. But Derrick Pouliot scored just 42 seconds into the third to extend Portland?s lead, and it was all downhill from there for Everett.
Nicolas Petan finished with two goals. Brendan Leipsic and Mathew Dumba also scored for Portland (32-12-2-3), which won its sixth straight. Brendan Burke earned the win with 30 saves.
Jujhar Khaira scored the lone goal for Everett (25-16-6-1). Austin Lotz allowed four goals on 23 shots before getting the hook midway through the third period. Daniel Cotton stopped nine of 10 shots in relief.
Everett was in the game at the start of the third period, trailing by a single goal, but it didn?t take long for Portland to put the game away. A mere 42 seconds into the period Pouliot took a quick shot from the side boards that beat Lotz to the near post to make it 3-1.
Then Petan beat Lotz with a shot off the rush at 7:42. Petan?s goal, his second of the night, sent Lotz to the bench.
To add further misery for Everett in the third, defenseman Noah Juulsen was assessed a major penalty for kneeing with 2:09 remaining and faces a possible suspension. Then during a five-on-three Portland power play that shortly followed, defenseman Ben Betker went down after blocking a shot and had to be helped off the ice. Dumba added further insult by scoring on the five-on-three to complete the third-period rout.
Portland scored the game?s first goal 10:03 into the first period. Everett had two good scoring chances before the Winterhawks broke the opposite direction. Petan set up Leipsic for the open goal in transition to make it 1-0.
Everett tied the game 1:11 into the second period on the power play. Ivan Nikolishin took a shot and Khaira was able to redirect it past Burke to knot it at 1-1.
The Winterhawks regained the lead at 16:52. Petan jammed at the puck during a scramble at the side of the goal, with the puck just getting past Lotz. After a video review it was ruled the puck crossed the goal line.
