SITKA, Alaska — There’s a small row over Sitka’s smoking ban.
The Daily Sitka Sentinel reports a 2005 law bans smoking in public places. But bars and clubs can allow smoking as long as no one under the age of 18 is ever in the club.
The local American Legion post allows smoking, and hosted a Christmas party for children last month. The event was a non-smoking affair.
But two council members now want to amend the city law so that bars and clubs can’t designate themselves as non-smoking venues for special events and allow smoking on other days.
The Legion asked the Assembly to vote down the measure or put it to a public vote.
Instead, the council on Tuesday sent it to a health committee for a recommendation.
