Arlington roars back to beat Snohomish

ARLINGTON — There was a sea of fans dressed in pink out in support of the Arlington boys basketball team and a number of honorary captains who have battled cancer for Coaches vs. Cancer Night.

Midway through the third quarter, however, the home team, trailing Snohomish 40-25, had given them little reason to stick around.

But led by Bradey Brummel, the Eagles chipped away at the Panthers’ lead and eventually took the lead themselves with just over a minute to play and held on to win a key Wesco 4A North contest 57-55 on Tuesday night.

“We had a lot of fans here tonight and we wanted them to walk out of here happy, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a few people left in the third quarter,” said Arlington head coach Nick Brown.

“There was a moment there when I thought ‘It’s not happening tonight,’ but these guys just kept believing.”

Brummel scored 14 points in Arlington’s 32-15 run to end the game that was the deciding factor in the victory. Brummel had a key lay-in with two minutes to play that cut Snohomish’s lead to three points at 52-49 and then a go-ahead basket with about a minute to play that gave the Eagles their first lead of the night.

Brummel was also huge on the defensive end in the closing minutes. Sandwiched between his two big shots was a steal after Kaleb Bryson’s three-point play had tied the game at 52. Even larger, though, was his strip of a Snohomish player as he went up for a shot with Arlington ahead by a basket with 10 seconds to play that all but sealed the win.

“Bradey is a competitor,” Brown said. “He made big plays. Kaleb made big plays. Noah (Jones) made some big shots. We had big plays from everywhere and that’s what you need in a game like that.”

With the teams tied at 54, Noah Jones made a lay-in for the game-winning basket and Kaleb Bryson hit a key free throw with 8 seconds to play to stretch the Eagles lead to three points.

Snohomish’s Tanner Arrington was fouled with 1 second to play and hit the front end of a one-and-one, but the putback on his purposely missed attempt on the second one bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

“This is a good experience for us tonight,” Brown said. “A basketball game is never over. Their kids played hard and they have steadily improved and I don’t think we’ve improved at the same rate.”

Snohomish came out on fire, scoring the game’s first six points behind a pair of baskets by Collin Kane. The Panthers 6-foot-7 post would go on to score 11 points and Tanner Arrington added a pair of 3-pointers in the first half as Snohomish led Arlington 36-23 at halftime.
