PORTLAND, Ore. — The Everett Silvertips had the mighty Portland Winterhawks where they wanted them.
Then the Winterhawks showed just why they’re in the midst of dominating the rest of the WHL.
Portland scored three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 30 seconds after falling behind early in the third period, and the Winterhawks knocked off the Tips 5-3 Saturday night.
Portland has been running riot over the competition of late, winning 11 straight and outscoring its opponents 56-11 over the previous nine. However, Kohl Bauml’s short-handed goal 2:07 into the third gave Everett a 3-2 lead.
But Portland responded with one of its patented scoring outbursts as Taylor Leier, Alex Schoenborn and Nicolas Petan scored in short order as Everett’s 3-2 lead turned into a 5-3 deficit in less than five minutes.
Leier finished with two goals and Layne Viveiros also scored for Portland (38-12-2-3). Corbin Boes earned the win in goal with 26 saves.
Ben Betker and Brayden Low scored the other goals for Everett (26-21-7-1), which suffered its fourth loss to Portland in 16 days. Austin Lotz finished with 36 saves in net for the Tips.
Everett hung tough with Portland through two periods, and Bauml gave the Tips the lead while short-handed early in the third when he intercepted a pass, held off a defender as he bore down on goal, and scored past Boes to make it 3-2.
But Portland responded just 2:09 later as a loose puck squirted to Leier out front, and he scored past Lotz.
The Winterhawks wasted no time going ahead, scoring again 1:33 later as Schoenborn found himself with a free shot at goal. Then before Everett could recover Portland scored the insurance goal another 57 seconds later, Petan finishing off a mad scramble in front of the Everett goal.
Everett thought it had taken the lead early in the first period, only for Logan Aasman’s apparent goal to be disallowed. But the Tips did take the lead at 8:01. Betker, a defenseman, worked his way to the front of the net on the rush, and he was there to put the puck in when Remi Laurencelle sent it out front.
Portland tied it at 11:54 when Viveiros’s slap shot from the point made its way through traffic and past Lotz. The Winterhawks looked like they were going to take the lead while on the power play in the final minute of the period, but Leier was somehow unable to put away a tap-in.
But Leier did score early in the second period just before the penalty expired, scoring from in close 57 seconds in, giving Portland a 2-1 lead.
Everett tied it back up at 16:13, Low beating Boes with a shot from a tight angle to make it 2-2.
