Edmonds City Council choosing new member
The Council will appoint a new member from among 14 applicants for the vacancy created when former Councilman Frank Yamamoto resigned late last year due to illness.
The Council interviewed the 14 applicants at its Jan. 28 meeting, then called seven back for more information at the Feb. 4 meeting. Council members will get further information Tuesday through interviews with two of the seven, while considering written responses from the other five.
The Council interviewed these six candidates at the Feb. 4, meeting: Harry Gatjen, Kathleen Dewhirst, Thomas W. Mesaros, Carreen Nordling Rubenkonig, Stephen C. Schroeder and Neil Tibbott. Council members interviewed candidate Tim E. Healy by each sending him one or two e-mailed questions because Healy was unavailable Tuesday.
Council President Diane Buckshnis gives this description of the process that the Council will follow Tuesday: "We will have all (14) candidates on the ballot and after an hour, if we do not come to consensus, we will move to executive session to discuss potential candidates and then, once we return, we will hopefully select a candidate and, if it goes for a second hour, we will break to executive session again and attempt to reconcile our issues."
Other candidates beside the seven being interviewed for a second time include former Councilmen Steve Bernheim and Ron Wambolt, along with Deborah Anderson, Randy Hayden, Philip Lopresti, Alvin Rutledge and Timothy A. Schell.
Buckshnis said Monday that the goal of the Council from the beginning was to ensure that all applicants feel that they are treated fairly and equally. She added that this continues to be the Council's objective.
The new council member will serve through the 2015 election.
