MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The first time the Edmonds-Woodway and Snohomish boys basketball teams met this season, the Panthers came away with a 55-50 win.
Thursday night the Warriors got a little revenge when it really counted.
In a loser-out game, Edmonds-Woodway led most of the way, defeating the Panthers 66-57 in the 4A District 1 third-place game at Mountlake Terrace High School. The Warriors will play host to Bothell in a winner-to-state regionals game Saturday.
“We really worked at denying the first pass,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Steve Call said. “We weren’t going to let them get any transition buckets. They got a lot of transition buckets against Mount Vernon their last game. … We executed well on the offensive end. We got the shots we wanted to get.”
Jason Smarr had 21 points to lead Edmonds-Woodway (15-9 overall), which led by as many as 19 points in the contest. Fellow senior Travis Bakken had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The senior post added six blocks for the Warriors.
“Travis and Jason have been our go-to guys,” Call said. “When Jason’s hitting well they’ve got to extend out and Travis, he’s just a workhorse. I couldn’t be more proud of our guys. We haven’t been in this spot in a few years.”
Snohomish (13-11 overall) got off to a good start and extended its lead to five points early on. But Edmonds-Woodway battled back and had a one-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Warriors took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 22-10.
The victory sets up an Edmonds-Woodway-Bothell rematch and gives the Warriors a chance to return to the state tournament for the first time since 2008. Bothell defeated Edmonds-Woodway 68-50 on Dec. 28. Bothell advanced to the rematch by defeating Roosevelt 50-45 in the Kingco third-place game on Thursday night.
The Edmonds-Woodway girls team, which beat Monroe in the third-place game before the boys team won, also will play host a Kingco-Wesco crossover game Saturday night. The E-W girls face Eastlake
