Tips lose in shootout

LETHBRIDGE, Alberta — Even an opponent on a 13-game losing streak couldn’t change Everett’s fortunes Wednesday night.

Everett, trying to rebound from a terrible loss the previous night, squandered a three-goal lead and fell 4-3 in a shootout to the flailing Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Lethbridge hadn’t won since September and the Hurricanes reached the point where they staged a mock exorcism at the Enmax Centre on Halloween in an attempt to turn things around.

It must have worked. Everett seemed to have the game done and dusted after grabbing a 3-0 lead early in the second period. But the Tips got into penalty trouble and the Hurricanes capitalized, scoring twice during a major penalty en route to tying it.

Then Cam Braes scored the only goal in the shootout as the Hurricanes prevailed 1-0.

Brady Ramsay scored twice in regulation and Landon Oslanski also scored for Lethbridge (3-13-0-1). Liam Liston earned the win in goal for the Hurricanes with 38 saves.

Tyler Maxwell, Jordyn Boyd and Josh Birkholz scored for Everett (4-11-0-3), which at least salvaged a point one night after being pummeled by Medicine Hat 10-2. The Tips also outshot their opponent for the first time during their trip through the Central Division.

The Tips handed a WHL debut to 15-year-old center Ty Mappin. Mappin, Everett’s first-round pick in this year’s bantam draft, was called up because the Tips have a flu epidemic going through the team.

Everett put itself in good position with two goals in 12 seconds late in the first period, Maxwell scoring on the power play at 15 minutes, 38 seconds and Boyd beating Liston to the near post moments later. The Tips seemed well on their way when Birkholz converted a penalty shot 6:36 into the second.

But Ramsay scored his first after a scramble in front at 8:20. Then a major penalty on Boyd for clipping gave the Hurricanes an extended power play, and Lethbridge scored twice in 13 seconds, a shot first deflecting off Ramsay at 14:36 and Oslanski shooting past a screened Simpson at 14:59.

Everett could have won it in both the third and OT, but Kohl Bauml and Evan Morden both drew iron, setting up the decisive shootout.
