Weekend to-dos: Oscars, wine tasting, outdoor expo, more

See the nominees: It’s not too late to catch up on some of the Oscar-nominated movies before the Academy Awards show begins at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Alderwood mall theater will show four of the best picture nominees beginning at noon Saturday: “Nebraska,” “Captain Phillips,” “Her” and “American Hustle.” It’s $40 for all four movies. Movies start at noon and you can buy tickets at the box office.

Roller derby: Tilted Thunder Rail Birds have a bout at 5 p.m. Saturday at Comcast Arena in Everett. Get more info and tickets here. (Buy them in advance if you can, they’re $3 more on Saturday.)

Wine: The Snohomish Wine Festival has two sessions on Saturday, one from 1-4 p.m. and one form 6-9 p.m. Choose among wines from 20 Washington wineries. Get more info or buy tickets online here.

Literary dress up: On Saturday night, Everett Public Library hosts “Stranger than Fiction,” a fundraiser to help support summer reading book prizes and other library projects. The 18-and-older party starts at 7 p.m. Read more in our story here.

Stuart Little: Dallas Children’s Theatre brings its production of “Stuart Little” to Everett at 2 p.m. Sunday at Everett Civic Auditorium. The play brings all the charm, wisdom and joy of E. B. Art: See some of the artists featured in “100 Artists of the Northwest” beginning Saturday. the Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park features 25 of the 100 artists featured in the Northwest book. Yeehaw: Head ‘em up and move ‘em out to the country-western sing-along celebration at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater in Snohomish. It’s a fundraiser for the theater and tickets are $10. Sing the songs from your favorites including Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams Jr. and The Judds. Get more info here.

Stand Up Against Cancer: A comedy benefit show for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center features local comedians Joe Vespaziani, Meredith Flanders, Matt Black, Aaron Kirby and Silas Lindenstein at 7:30 Saturday night at Historic Everett Theatre. Tickets are $18 and are available at the theater box office, by calling 425-258-6766 or online.

All about fruit: The WSU Research and Extension Center in Mount Vernon is holding a Winter Field Day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The event includes grafting and mason bee workshops, pruning demonstrations, and presentations on growing apples and other fruit. The center is at 16650 Highway 536, Mount Vernon. Expo: The Northwest Outdoor Adventure Expo is Friday to Sunday at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. There will be discussions, slide shows, music and indoor adventures such as a zip line and paddle pool. There will also be a variety of outdoor vendors. Get more info here.
