Woman of the Year runner-up: Amy Eloise Neale

Last spring, Amy-Eloise Neale closed one of the most remarkable high school careers in Snohomish County sports history.
Late in the summer she began what could be an equally promising career at the University of Washington.
Neale, a premier distance runner and finalist for The Herald’s 2013 Woman of the Year in Sports, capped her four years at Snohomish’s Glacier Peak High School by winning Class 3A state track and field championships in the 800 and 1,600 meters. They were the sixth and seventh state track and field championships for Neale, who had previously won three individual state cross country titles.
For her accomplishments, she was named the Gatorade Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the third straight year.
A few months later she began her college career as a freshman on the UW cross country team and was a top-five runner for the Huskies much of the season. She helped Washington to a third-place finish at the Pacific-12 Conference championships, a fifth-place finish at the West Regional championships, and then completed her season at the NCAA championships in Terre Haute, Ind., by placing 121st overall, fourth on her team, and helping the Huskies to a 17th-place finish.
