Osoberry

Native plant a reminder of renewal

Osoberry , Indian Plum, Oemleria cerasiforma.
The first plant to noticeably break into spring is our native Osoberry. A coincidence that the community name and the plant that breaks its leaf buds the earliest is the same. A coincidence that the tragedy and the newest leaves of spring have happened at the same exact time.
Every year I watch for the reddish-tan arching canes that line nearly all of our roads to announce the start of the renewal of our greenry.
In the comimg years when the buds break, I will also remember the tragic struggle of my friends when they met their end, but also the way our communities responded to disaster. How they came together and performed above and beyond all expectations and made me proud.
