Every year at the end of the basketball season Jamar Williams and the Archbishop Murphy athletic director sit down to discuss the season.
After the latest one, Williams stepped down as head coach of the Wildcats’ boys basketball team.
Williams recently met with outgoing Archbishop Murphy athletic director Alex Crane and decided a few days later to resign.
“At the end of every season each coach has an evaluation with their athletic director. It was nothing unusual with what took place,” Williams said. “We had a discussion and discussed a few things that we saw eye-to-eye with and some things we didn’t. At the end of the day we decided this was best. … I feel it’s a right decision for both parties. I’m not upset or bitter. Nobody should be upset or bitter. It’s a celebration of what we’ve done the last four years.”
In those four years, Williams said that his highlights included establishing a feeder program at Archbishop Murphy, a holiday basketball tournament the Wildcats hosted last December and “all the kids we were able to coach.” Williams compiled a record of 46-39 in his time at Archbishop Murphy.
“No sadness at all. It should be a celebration,” Williams said. “When you’re in the grind and you’re coaching year-to-year you don’t have a lot of opportunities to sit back and reflect on what you’ve done as a program. This gives me a chance to step back and look at what we were able to do.”
