In a blog post here last week, I highlighted some of the contributions to relief efforts for the Oso mudslide made by the Machinists union and members working at Boeing. Here’s another one worth mentioning: Individual Machinists have pitched in to raise more than $9,000 in gas cards for people affected by the March 22 landslide, which killed at least 36 people. The donations have been funneled through a Machinist and Boeing employee, who is also a volunteer firefighter in the area.
The slide shut down Highway 530 between Oso and Darrington. There is no timetable for re-opening the road to through traffic. A temporary road has been opened to support recovery efforts and emergency services.
With Highway 530 shut down, residents west of the slide have to take a long detour to the north. The extra mileage is pinching people’s pocketbooks, so the gas cards are a very practical donation.
