SNOHOMISH — The Snohomish Lacrosse Club’s girls varsity team needed a wake-up call against Mukilteo on Monday and once it happened it was wide awake.
After falling behind 1-0, Mukilteo scored three straight goals to take an early 3-1 advantage. Snohomish responded by scoring 17 of the game’s final 18 goals to win 18-4.
“I don’t like making excuses, (but) we just had spring break,” Snohomish head coach Katie Carroll said after the game. “We haven’t really played as a team (during spring break) because we’ve been missing some people. I think for some people it was just that time they needed to get back into lacrosse.”
Mukilteo dominated possession early and got goals from Kamiak’s Melanie Rizzotti, Jackson’s Melissa Reeves and Everett’s Madison Rutledge to claim the early advantage.
“We weren’t recognizing people that were threats,” Carroll said. “We weren’t making adjustments quickly on the field. Luckily, we took a time out and got to work some stuff out and turned it around.”
Snohomish improved to 4-0 in the North Sound Division of the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association and 5-1 overall on the season with Monday’s victory.
Loaded with weapons all over the field Carroll and her team are aiming high.
“Our goal this year is winning the state championship, which is a very high goal, but I think one that we can get to,” Carroll said. “We take it steps at a time and game by game. Our goal right now is winning our conference because that gets us an automatic bid to the playoffs, so 4-0 in our conference is a step in the right direction.”
Snohomish’s Hanna Dalrymple, who attends Glacier Peak High School, led the team with four goals and one assist. Dalrymple will play lacrosse for St. Mary’s College in California next season and her performance on Monday showed why.
“She’s really a powerhouse for us,” Carroll said. “The ball gets in her stick and she makes things happen, whether it’s scoring or assisting or just in the draw circle. She has the ability to take over games, which when we need it to happen is a good thing to have on the team.”
Dalrymple is one of the tallest players on the field and she used that height several times to control high passes in front of the goal and go straight into her shooting motion.
“It’s definitely an advantage in lacrosse,” Carroll said of Dalrymple’s height. “She’s really good at extending the stick away from her body which a lot of people don’t do. That gives her not just her height and the stick, but three more feet of arm. She’s really dangerous in the air.”
Glacier Peak’s Kayla Petz also chipped in three goals and two assists for Snohomish.
Reeves finished with two goals to lead Mukilteo.
