Sidney Rice returning to Seahawks

The Seahawks released Sidney Rice earlier this season, but the receiver will play in Seattle this season anyway, having agreed to a deal with the Seahawks Wednesday.

Rice himself announced the news on Twitter, and a team spokesman later confirmed that Rice has agreed to terms on a deal.

Rice, who tore his ACL in October, was released earlier this offseason, freeing up $7.5 million in cap space, but Seahawks coach Pete Carroll left the door open to the possibility of the Seahawks re-signing Rice. Rice was cleared earlier this week to resume football activity, which caused interest to pick up—he reportedly visited with the New York Jets Wednesday.

By re-signing with Seattle, reportedly on a one-year deal, Rice will get a chance to prove he can stay healthy after missing the second half of last season, as well as seven games in 2011—Rice did play in all 16 games in 2012 when he enjoyed his best season with Seattle, catching 50 passes for 748 yards and seven touchdowns. And if Rice is healthy, the Seahawks could add a productive pass catcher after losing last year’s leading receiver, Golden Tate, in free agency. Rice also gives Seattle a 6-foot-4 receiver to add size to otherwise undersized unit.

At least one Seahawk seemed awfully excited to get Rice back, with Russell Wilson weighing in on Twitter with a simple: “YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! @sidneyrice”
