Prep boys soccer: Meadowdale 3, Stanwood 2 (2OT)

EDMONDS — With both squad’s battling back-and-forth through regulation and the first overtime period, Tristan Springer managed to convert a throw-in into the game-winning goal with two minutes remaining in the second overtime to give Meadowdale the 3-2 victory over Stanwood in a Wesco 3A match on Friday night.

“By the time you get to an overtime both teams are gassed,” said Mavs head coach Wade Foley. “Both teams are just trying to find those fresh legs and really it come down to who can kick the ball the longest and at the right time.”

The 88th minute of the match proved to be the right time for Meadowdale with senior Taylor Linton finding Springer on the backside on a throw-in that allowed the Mavs to end it. Foley admitted however that the match could’ve proved different if his team had been able to convert on early opportunities.

“It was one of those games where we couldn’t finish,” Foley said. “When you don’t convert and you give a team like Stanwood a chance you have to play off your heals. My guys kept fighting tonight though.”

The second half saw two ties before heading into the first overtime, with Austin Panek putting the ball into the net with roughly three minutes remaining in regulation to make the score 2-2.

“We definteiy waited a long time to score that tying goal…maybe a little longer than their coach would’ve liked.” Foley said jokingly.
