Tocco big in MP’s win over Glacier Peak

SNOHOMISH — Marysville Pilchuck’s Kayla Tocco doubled twice, scored two runs and finished 3-for-4 as the Tomahawks edged Glacier Peak 4-3 in a Wesco 3A crossover softball game on Tuesday.

Tocco played a significant part in Marysville Pilchuck’s two-run fourth and sixth innings. The junior led off the top of the fourth with a double and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly from Kylie Lopez. Karly Albertson added an RBI groundout later in the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

In the sixth, Tocco doubled in the go-ahead run and scored the eventual game-winner on a passed ball.

“Tocco was up at the right times,” Marysville Pilchuck head coach Aaron Zachry said. “She’s a good hitter and really clutched up today.”

Marysville Pilchuck needed Tocco’s contributions to overcome two home runs from Glacier Peak’s Abby Doney. Doney, batting ninth in the Grizzlies’ order, hit a two-run home run in the third and added a solo shot in the seventh that closed the deficit to 4-3.

Glacier Peak nearly added the tying run to force extra innings. With a runner on second base, a line drive off the bat of Callie Bircher was straight at a Tomahawks defender.

“Bircher laced the ball on the screws to right field,” Zachry said. “Three feet left or right and it’s a tie game.”
