STANWOOD — Tyler Givens pitched five scoreless innings and drove in the game-winning RBI with a sacrafice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Stanwood baseball team a 5-4 Wesco 3A victory over Shorewood.
The loss was the Thunderbirds’ first of the season.
“Tyler’s been strong all year for us,” Stanwood head coach Colby Knudson said. “He threw really, really well tonight and he really commanded his fastball.”
The Thunderbirds sent six different pitchers to the mound in the game, including five different pitchers in the first four innings. Shorewood head coach Wyatt Tonkin employed the same strategy against the Spartans a season ago, and with his team playing just one game this week he wanted to get in as many pitchers as he could.
“You dont question a coach like (Tonkin),” Knudson said. “He’s got quite the program so you dont question anything he decides to do.”
After falling behind 4-0, a three-run homer by senior Kory Longaker in the bottom of the sixth cut the lead to one before the T-Birds eventually tied the game. Wyatt Jeans pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save for the Spartans.
Wednesday’s win puts Stanwood at 9-3 in league and 11-4 overall. The Spartans trail only Marysville Pilchuck in the 3A North standings. Stanwood will play a three-game series against the Tomahawks beginning on Tuesday.
“It’s always a good thing to find a way to get a win against a great team,” Knudson said. “For us its just a huge confidence builder heading into a tough series against Marysville Pilchuck.”
