Mountlake Terrace High School music teacher Darin Faul has traveled with his jazz band students to perform in such places New York City, Savannah, Ga., and Disneyland.
Friday night, they have yet another gig.
Starbucks’ annual “Hot Java, Cool Jazz” show at the Paramount begins at 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the theater, 911 Pine St., Seattle.
Mountlake Terrace performs along with jazz bands from Ballard, Bothell, Garfield and Roosevelt high schools. All five schools have made it to the prestigious, invitational Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival and Competition in New York during the past dozen years. In 2011, Terrace placed third in the nation.
For a listen to Terrace’s work from a concert on April 1, go online to tinyurl.com/MTHSjazz. The concert was dedicated to the memory of a former student, the late Forest Jackson, a saxophonist who received an excellent soloist award at the 2011 Essentially Ellington competition.
Faul said it has been a busy, successful and emotional year for his Jazz Ensemble 1, which rehearses at 7 a.m. each day at school.
“I’m so proud of all the band members,” Faul said.
Proceeds from ticket sales of tonight’s show benefit the schools’ music programs. For tickets, $19 each, call Seattle Theatre Group, 877-784-4849.
