As the Seattle Seahawks continue their preparation for the 2014 season with phase two of their offseason workout schedule, they are currently practicing without Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor.
Chancellor had surgery on his hip about a month ago, a team spokesman confirmed. No timetable was given for his recovery, but with the surgery occurring in early April, Chancellor would have nearly fourth months to recover and rehab before the start of training camp.
Chancellor has dealt with hip issues dating back at least to the 2012 season and been able to play through starting every game over the past two seasons, though from time to time he has shown up on the injury report after missing or being limited in practice, including last postseason. Despite whatever soreness he was dealing with, Chancellor was arguably Seattle's best defensive player in the postseason, totaling 35 tackles and two interceptions in three games.
The Seahawks re-signed Chancellor's backup, Jeron Johnson, who was set to be a restricted free agent, so if Chancellor isn't ready for the start of the season, look for Johnson to fill in. The Seahawks also have DeShawn Shead, who filled in for Chancellor in the Super Bowl after he was briefly sidelined by a leg injury.
