Plants and trains head a busy weekend to-do list

Plant sales galore: Pick up a plant for Mom (you did know Sunday is Mother’s Day, didn’t you?) at one of the many plant sales happening Saturday across Snohomish County. Here’s the full list.

Choo-choo: You don’t have to travel far to celebrate National Train Day Saturday. The Swamp Creek &Western Railroad Association of Edmonds is having a free open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Edmonds Amtrak Depot baggage room, 210 Railroad St.

Model trains will operate on a layout with 400 feet of HO scale track that passes through miniature towns and detailed scenery as it follows an actual surveyed route over White Pass.

Music and laughs: Catch a production of “Thugs: A Musical Mafiasco” Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Wade James Theater in Edmonds. Learn more about this mobster musical comedy in our preview.

Be inspired: See artists at work along the Camano Island Studio Tour, which opens Friday and continues this weekend and next. Learn about one of the artists and get more details on the tour in our story.

Powwow power: Everett Community College hosts its 22nd annual Hibulb Powwow, “Keeping the Traditions Alive,” Saturday at the Student Fitness Center, 2206 Tower St., Everett. The free event features traditional American Indian dancing, drumming, singing and arts and crafts. Touch a truck: Kids can hop into fire engines and other cool trucks Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the parking lot of the Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave. There will be a street fair with activities for kids and adults to learn the best ways to handle emergency situations.

Going bats: The Bat Lady, Barbara Ogaard, comes in for a landing from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Monroe Library. Ogaard will use props, slides and live bats from Sarvey Wildlife Center and Bats Northwest to dispel the myths about the gentle and beneficial creatures. The free, all-ages event is at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way. Call 360-794-7851 for more information.

Squawk talk: After the bats, fly over to the Everett Library at 2 p.m. to meet the Parrot Lady, Debbie Goodrich, who brings along live parrots to teach kids about the wild side of the tropical birds and their tamed counterparts. The library is at 2702 Hoyt Ave. Call 425-257-8000 or go to www.epls.org.

Even more birds: Did you know Saturday is International Migratory Bird Day? Wave hello to a passing osprey to celebrate. The Pilchuck Audubon Society and Brightwater are among those marking the occasion with bird walks and other events across Snohomish County.

Cheers: The Snohomish Hard Cider Festival is 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Craven Farm, 13817 Short School Road in Snohomish. The festival will showcase 10 hard cider makers from the Pacific Northwest and a French cider. Tickets are $25 and include five tasting tokens and appetizers.
