Snohomish girls lacrosse advances to state semifinals

PUYALLUP — Hanna Dalrymple waited three years to make it back, and with a 9–2 lead in the second half of Monday’s girls high school lacrosse quarterfinal matchup with Puyallup, the reality of being just one win away from playing for a state championship finally sunk in.

“We’ve lost in the quarterfinals every year. “It’s having that regret feeling. It’s been really frustrating,” said Dalrymple, whose Snohomish squad defeated Puyallup 18-2, on the road at Glacier View Junior High School. “Finally we’re there.”

For Dalrymple, whose four goals and single assist helped lead the combined Snohomish-Glacier Peak High School squad to its first state semifinal appearance since her freshman year in 2011, the win was as much about getting the regret monkey off her back as proving that her squad can run with the elite teams in the state.

But the NCAA Division I lacrosse commit to California’s St. Mary’s College knows there is more work to be done.

“Since the beginning of the year we’ve played as one team with one heart and one goal. Now it’s starting to sink in,” Dalrymple said. “I’m half excited and half nervous.”

Facing a Puyallup squad that took apart Gig Harbor 12–3 in its opening round win on Friday, Snohomish, led by Dalrymple’s opening goal just over a minute into the contest, went on a four-score run before Emerald Ridge sophomore Kaylee Baker finally put Puyallup on the board, beating goaltender Zoe Powell to make it 4–1 with 16:22 remaining in the half.

Systematically taking down a smothering zone defense that earned Puyallup one of the top records in the state with 11 wins, Snohomish went on to score the next five of six.

The Snohomish goal-run was interrupted only by an Olivia Bean score for Puyallup at the 11:30 mark that made it 6-2 on the way to a 9–2 half–time lead.

The Emerald Ridge junior’s score would be the last for a Puyallup team that was among the state’s top performers this spring scoring 11 or more goals in 12 of 13 games.

“The lead helped us focused on ourselves in the second half and get ready for next round,” said Snohomish coach Katie Carroll, whose squad will face the Lake Sammamish Lacrosse Club, last year’s state runner up, which narrowly defeated Eastside Catholic 8–7 in its quarterfinal on Wednesday to also advance.

“It’s easy to come off of an 18-2 win and get complacent,” Carroll said. “We’ll have to work on the intensity for the next level.”

Snohomish was led by Glacier Peak sophomore Hannah Graves with six points (5g, 1a) while Dalrymple, who won four draws contributing to the team’s 11 draw controls on the night for a 64 percent win rate in the possession game, had five points.

In goal, Powell along with Daryia Tagg were rarely tested, combining for three saves while Puyallup’s Shannon Cribbin had five.

In Wednesday’s first state semifinal, Snohomish takes on the Lake Sammamish Lacrosse Club for the right to play in its first Washington state girls championship game, Friday at Mercer Island High School.

In other girls state quarterfinal action on Monday, Lakeside, last year’s state champion, downed Lake Tapps 13–5, while the Issaquah beat the Bellevue East Lacrosse Club 10–9 in double overtime. The two will square-off Wednesday, in the state’s second semifinal matchup.
