Before we get to what happened on the field, we’ll start with who wasn’t practicing, namely receiver pick Paul Richardson.
The second-round pick impressed during Friday’s practice, but his day ended with an awkward collision on an attempt at a diving catch on the last play of practice, and while Richardson popped up quickly and jogged off the field, he was held out for “precautionary reasons.” What body part was injured wasn’t specified (we didn’t hear from Pete Carroll today), but the injury isn’t believed to be serious, and even if Richardson isn’t on the field Sunday, he is expected to be back for the next session of OTAs.
OT Garrett Scott sat out again (Carroll said yesterday the sixth-round pick still had to pass a physical), as did WR Chris Matthew (hamstring)
Now, onto practice…
—With Richardson and Matthews both sitting out along tryout WR Lance Ray, that meant a busy day for the four available receivers. Fourth-round pick Kevin Norwood stood out with his second straight strong day, making several nice catches and showing enough speed to get open deep as well.
—We had a story on Keith Price in today’s Herald, and the former UW quarterback was impressive again today, taking full advantage of the reps he’s getting as one of only two quarterbacks at rookie minicamp.
—DT Michael Brooks, who spent time with the Seahawks last season both on the active roster and the practice squad, earned both laughs and praise when he hustled 40 or so yards down field to chase running back Ryan Montague into the end zone. Pete Carroll even ran over to high-five Brooks for the effort.
—Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis showed off some of the range on several plays (just a thought, running backs, don’t try to bounce a run outside if Pierre-Louis is out there). It’s easy to see why the Seahawks and their scouting department are so high on the athleticism of the fourth-round pick.
—A day after Eric Pinkins was beat deep a couple of times, most notably by Richardson on a long touchdown, it was interesting to see the safety-turned-corner getting some individual attention from Carroll as the coach had Pinkins and Marcus Smith, a tryout player from Nevada, doing one-on-one drills. And for that matter, Smith, who is listed as a safety, saw a lot of time at cornerback Saturday and looked pretty good. Perhaps a candidate to be this year’s Benson Mayowa (tryout player to earn a contract)?
