Three students named aerospace scholarsThe Washington Aerospace Scholars program announced that four local students will be participating in one of the four WAS Summer Residency sessions held in June and July at the Museum of Flight in Seattle: Jared Graef, Lake Stevens High School; Bethany Garver, Sky Valley Education Center; and Mary Hlavacka, Glacier Peak High School.
WAS is a competitive educational program designed to connect high school juniors with educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through independent learning, hands-on interaction, professional guidance and site-based tours.
Mukilteo Arts Guild awards scholarshipsThe Mukilteo Arts Guild has awarded scholarships of $600 each to three local students: Christine Cruz from Kamiak High School, Jessica Pal from Mariner High School, and Elizaveta Mikhailouna Lepesha from Aces High School.
The scholarships are funded with vendor fees from the guild’s Waterfront Art Festival (held in August) and Art Mart (held in November). The goal is to work up to $1,000 for future scholarship recipients.

Lamoureux, Morrow earn EvCC alum honorEverett Community College has selected real estate business owner Barbara Lamoureux and former Everett City Council member Ed Morrow as the college’s 2014 Distinguished Alumni. The two were honored at the Everett Community College Foundation breakfast April 22.
Students recognized for Holocaust essaysThree Snohomish County students were among the winners in the Washington State Holocaust Resource Center’s 2014 Holocaust Writing, Art and Digital Media Contest. All three students were honored for written work.
Students in Deb Kalina’s sophomore English class at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek participate in the high school writing portion of the contest each year. This year, Jonathan Tan took second place. Jennifer Hanna received honorable mention.
In the middle school division, Makayla North, an eighth-grader at Centennial Middle School in Snohomish, received an honorable mention for her essay “Elegy for Ebi Gruenblatt.”

S. Everett, Mukilteo Rotary honors studentThe South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club named Cascade High School’s Hannah Albert its May Student of the Month. Albert is a high-achieving student who takes challenging courses. She also is involved in YoungLife and school leadership and plays soccer.
Mukilteo district honors 2 Mariner staffJeff Federer, an English teacher at Mariner High School, and Susie Richardson, a paraeducator at Mariner, were recently named the winners of the Lighthouse Award for the second semester, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a Mukilteo School District employee.
AAUW honors 12 for STEM achievementsThe American Association of University Women, Everett branch, recently honored 12 high school junior girls with Certificates of Excellence for their achievements in math, science and technology: Ashley Turcott (math), Audrey Taber (science) and Brittany Burrus (technology) from Cascade High School; Kelsey Southwick (math), Emma Pountain (science) and Kaia McKinnon (technology) from Everett High School; Hannah Cho (math), Indira Rayala (science) and Anna Nguyen (technology) from Henry M. Jackson High School; and Safari Court (math), Charlena Coleman (science) and Allyssa Jolly (technology) from Sequoia High School.
Soroptimists assist Navy Junior ROTCSoroptimist International of Marysville recently gave $1,500 to the Marysville School District’s Navy Junior ROTC program. The club also recognized Cadet Senior Chief Shandale Garcia as its outstanding NJROTC student for the 2013-14 school year.
Middle-schoolers get special encouragementVoyager Middle School students in Annamarie Jordan’s seventh-grade classes were treated to a visit on May 22 by Wolf Yeigh, chancellor of the University of Washington-Bothell, who talked to students and handed out UW-Bothell swag.
Yeigh made the visit after receiving 25 letters from Voyager students expressing an interest in attending UW-Bothell, part of Jordan’s efforts to expose her students to the possibility of attending college, especially since many face barriers to higher education. In his speech, Yeigh noted that nearly half of UW-Bothell students are the first in their families to attend college.
Arlington Rotary honors studentsThe Rotary Club of Arlington recently recognized its Outstanding Students of the Month for May. Students received a voucher for a $50 donation to a nonprofit of their choice. Honored were:
Hannah Mendro, a senior at Arlington High School, who selected Gilda’s Hands;
Hannah Maris, a senior at Weston High School, who ;selected NOAH animal shelter;
Oliver Rankin, a junior at Darrington High School, who selected North County Family Resource Center.

Murphy grad at Toronto film festKevin O’Donnell, of Snohomish and a 2009 graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School, along with four fellow Central Washington University students recently traveled to Toronto for the world premiere of their seven-minute documentary. The short film, “Spirit of the West,” was one of 12 that made the final cut in the International Documentary Challenge, or Doc Challenge. More than 100 films from all over the world were entered in the contest.
O’Donnell is a senior at CWU where he’s studying film and video.
Granite Falls senior a service contest finalistDansil Green, a junior at Granite Falls High School, was presented June 5 with an engraved bronze medallion to recognize her selection as a Distinguished Finalist for Washington in the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.
Seven qualify for national FCCLAThe state Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) held its State Leadership Conference March 26-28 in Wenatchee. Competitions were held March 26 with 312 members competing in 28 team and individual events like “Focus on Children,” “Career Investigation,” “Leadership,” “Entrepreneurship,” “Fashion Construction,” “Culinary Arts” and many more. The top two students in each event qualify for the National FCCLA competition, to be held July 5-10 in San Antonio, Texas.
Local students who qualified: Sarah Bradley, Katie Ellis, Yvette Herrera, Larisa Kreft, Amanda Kristofferson and Stacey Van Dyke, all of Lake Stevens High School, and Morgan Skoog of Monroe High School.
$143K in scholarships from Stanwood groupThe Stanwood-Camano Community Scholarship Night Award Ceremony was held May 27 at the Stanwood High School Performing Arts Center. This year, 123 students received 214 different scholarships totaling a record $143,463 — the majority of which was donated by current or past members of the local community.
The small community of around 33,000 full-time residents has one of the largest scholarship programs in the entire state, growing from two $150 scholarships in 1962. A scholarship cycle for adults who want to further their education or get added training begins June 23. More information is at www.s-ccs.org.
Marysville student earns military awardSarah Wennersten of Marysville was one of 600 college and high school students worldwide to receive a $2,000 scholarship from the Scholarships for Military Children Program. Wennersten will attend Wayland Baptist University this fall.
About 5,000 students applied for the scholarships at commissary locations worldwide, including Smokey Point. The program is for students who have at least one parent in the U.S. Armed Services, including active duty, retirees, guard and reserves as well as children of deceased military personnel.
Marysville teen appointed to West PointSam Galbreath of Lake Stevens has received an appointment to the class of 2018 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Galbreath is scheduled to graduate this month from Grace Academy in Marysville where he was a member of the Student Leadership Council, National Honor Society, choir, and soccer and golf teams. He will report to West Point on July 2.
LDS students give kudos to teachersThe Lynnwood Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on May 10 recognized influential high school teachers, as nominated by local LDS Seminary students (a before-school class where high school students study the scriptures) from the Mukilteo, Lynnwood and Mill Creek areas.
Honored were Beverly Roberson, Henry M. Jackson High School; Marci Bowker, Kamiak High School; Doug Trost, Lynnwood High School; Gerald Christensen, Meadowdale High School; and Spencer Stiglets, Mountlake Terrace High School.
