The Seattle Thunderbirds announced their home-opening game for the 2014-15 season today, and it happens to be against Everett in a rematch of the first-round playoff series between the teams. The game is Saturday Sept. 20 at ShoWare Center in Kent.
This is pretty rare. Everett and Seattle almost never meet on the opening weekend of the season, instead loading up on head-to-head contests during the second half of the season. Only twice in the previous 11 seasons have the I-5 rivals played on opening weekend, those coming in 2009 and 2010.
While this is Seattle’s home opener, it’s probably not Everett’s season opener as the Tips will likely play the preceding Friday night. Whether that’s a home or an away game, we’ll just have to wait and see.
The T-birds press release also says their full-season schedule will be released on June 25, so I suspect that’s when we’ll learn Everett’s schedule, too.
