EVERETT — The Spokane Indians completed a three-game sweep of the Everett AquaSox on Saturday night, beating the Sox 5-2 in a Northwest League game at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Everett came into the contest batting just .231 as a team, and the Sox’s offensive woes continued as they managed just six hits.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who joined the Indians earlier in the day, went 2-for-4 with a double and triple in his Northwest League debut to lead Spokane (13-2). Starting pitcher Nick Gardewine earned the victory, allowing three hits and one walk through six scoreless innings. He struck out six.
Everett (4-12) dropped its fourth straight and has won just once in eight contests at home this season.
Spokane received all the offense it needed in the top of the fourth inning. Kiner-Falefa grounded an RBI double right down the third-base line to open the scoring. Then Charles Moorman followed by grounding a two-run single through the same hole, making it 3-0.
Everett had a chance in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Adam Parks came on to get the final out.
Call to arms
The Everett pitching staff underwent an overhaul Saturday.
Three pitchers joined the team, all of them college hurlers selected in this year’s draft.
Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough is a 22-year-old from Lakeland, Fla., who was the Seattle Mariners’ fourth-round pick. He had been with Pulaski of the rookie Appalachian League, where he threw four scoreless innings of relief. This spring he was 6-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 18 games (14 starts) at Old Dominion. Right-hander Lukas Schiraldi is a 20-year-old from Austin, Texas, who was picked in the 15th round. This spring he was 7-3 with a 4.08 ERA in 13 starts at Texas. Right-hander Hawtin Buchanan is a 21-year-old from Biloxi, Miss., who was selected in the 20th round. This spring he was 0-0 with an 8.18 ERA in 12 relief appearances at Mississippi.
Meanwhile, right-hander Ricardo Pereira was sent to Pulaski. The Venezuela native, who spent last season with the Sox, was 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA in four relief appearances with Everett this season.
Short hops
Everett catcher Adam Martin was on crutches and wearing a boot on his left foot Saturday. Martin fouled a ball off his foot Friday night and though he finished the at-bat, he was removed afterward. Martin was diagnosed with a bruised foot, and Sox trainer Shane Zdebiak said there was no timetable for his return. … The Sox finally have their hitting coach. Mike Davis was on the bench for the first time this season during Everett’s game Saturday against Spokane. Davis, a former major leaguer with the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers from 1980-89, missed the first 15 games of the seasons while dealing with a family matter.
