AquaSox’s rally falls short, Canadians beat Everett 6-5

EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox matched the Vancouver Canadians home run for home run Tuesday night, but just couldn’t match them on the scoreboard.

Each team belted two home runs and the AquaSox kept it close throughout, but couldn’t overtake the Canadians, who held on to defeat Everett 6-5 at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Vancouver didn’t get a hit off Frogs starter Luiz Gohara (0-2) until the top of the third. It took one more inning for the Canadians to get on the scoreboard with the first home run — a three-run blast by Sean Hurley. Vancouver’s No. 9 hitter belted the ball with two outs to give the Canadians (15-10) the early lead.

Franklin Barreto added another run on an RBI single later in the inning for Vancouver, which scored all six of its runs with two outs.

Everett (6-19) quickly responded in the bottom of the fourth, getting their first hit off starter Starlyn Suriel (2-1). After Chris Mariscal ripped a basehit off the glove of Vancouver’s diving third baseman Alexis Maldonado, Corey Simpson crushed a two-run homer to left center field.

The Frogs got closer in the fifth when Jordan Cowan put down a squeeze bunt with two outs to score Kyle Petty. That cut the deficit to 4-3.

The homers continued in the sixth inning, with each team getting a hit that left the ballpark. Tim Locastro had a two-run shot off Everett’s Vinny Nittoli in the top half of the inning. Mariscal led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot for the AquaSox.

Corey Simpson followed with an RBI single later in the inning to once again get the Frogs within one, 6-5, and chase Suriel out of the game.

But the AquaSox offense struggled in the later innings and couldn’t get any closer. Vancouver’s Kamakani Usui had a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

Simpson batted 2-for-4 with three RBI and Mariscal (2-for-3) added two runs scored and an RBI for the AquaSox.

Hitting streaks

AquaSox catcher Adam Martin went into Tuesday’s game with an eight-game hitting streak, which ties teammate Chris Mariscal for the team’s season-high. During the streak, which started June 24, Martin has 15 hits — including five multi-hit games — and is batting .484.

For the season, Martin is batting .388 with two home runs and a .592 slugging percentage in 14 games.

Frogs teammate Austin Cousino, is also riding a hitting streak, hitting safely in his past eight games at Everett Memorial Stadium. He’s batting .324 at home and .240 on the road during the streak.

Both of Cousino’s home runs this season have come at Everett Memorial.

Short hops

Kyle Petty has had three multi-hit games in his past four starts, with three doubles, one home run and six RBI during the stretch. Petty had his home run and four RBI in the Frogs’ most recent game, an 11-5 win over Tri-City on Sunday that snapped a nine-game home losing streak. … Outfielder Phillips Castillo, in his second year with the AquaSox, has reached base safely in 14 consecutive games. He also is the team leader in doubles (seven), home runs (three) and RBI (12). … In his past 11 games, Everett infielder Jordan Cowan is batting .349 (15-for-43).
