SEATTLE — The campaign for a ballot initiative to decrease public school class sizes has already raised nearly $630,000. Most of the money is from the Washington Education Association, the statewide teachers union.
According to reports from the Public Disclosure Commission, the WEA has donated $350,000 toward the initiative campaign. Another $100,000 has come from a union that represents other Washington school employees, the Public School Employees Union.
The National Education Association has pitched in $83,000 and a small donation came from the Kelso teachers union.
The ballot proposal would require smaller classes at every grade level. Lower goals would be set for high poverty schools and in early grades.
Sponsors of the Class Size Counts initiative say Washington has some of the largest average class sizes in the nation.
