NORTHPORT — The Stevens County sheriff says a 15-year-old South Korean exchange student is missing and presumed drowned in the Columbia River in northeast Washington.
KHQ-TV reported that Sheriff Kendle Allen says the boy has not been seen since Thursday afternoon when word came in that he had grown tired while swimming off a boat launch at the town park in Northport.
The boy reportedly was swimming with at least one other teen about 20 feet out from the dock when he began to struggle. The second teen swam back safely. A reserve deputy who lives nearby responded immediately in his boat and began a search.
Boaters and divers have not been able to find the boy.
The sheriff says the boy was staying with a host family in Northport.
