MONROE — Multiple people were injured Saturday in a crash on U.S. 2 at Fern Bluff Road, between Monroe and Sultan.
An 89-year-old Maryland man suffered life-threatening head injuries, said trooper Mark Francis with the Washington State Patrol. The other injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The collision happened about 1 p.m.
There was stop-and-go eastbound traffic on the highway at the time, Francis said.
An eastbound Ford F-350 was stopped at the intersection.
A Honda Civic was stopped on Fern Bluff Road, with the driver waiting to cross the highway.
The Ford driver left room for the Honda to get across, Francis said.
The Honda driver started across the highway and was struck by a westbound Saturn station wagon, Francis said. The Honda then struck the Ford.
The Saturn was pushed into the eastbound lane and caught fire. Police and bystanders pulled the people from the car. The Saturn driver suffered cuts and scrapes.
The Maryland man, who was a passenger in the Saturn, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was revived at the scene by aid crews and bystanders, officials said.
The man’s wife, 85, was taken to a local hospital with a broken leg.
Two people in the Ford were not hurt.
A husband, wife and 1-year-old son in the Honda were taken to a local hospital and were not seriously hurt, Francis said. The husband, who was driving the Honda, is being investigated for failure to yield.
The 27-year-old Snohomish man submitted to a voluntary blood draw, and no drugs or alcohol were found.
No other serious injuries were reported.
The highway was closed for about 90 minutes.
The investigation continues.
