I made a whirlwind trip last night to see Ladder Creek Falls at the Gorge Powerhouse in Newhalem.
The falls are lit up each night by LED lights with a programmed light show. I’ve wanted to see them ever since I heard about them on an earlier trip.
The falls are gorgeous during the day, but seeing them at night is a completely different experience. It’s surreal and mesmerizing.
The lights go through a program that repeats every 15 minutes. The red lights on the tallest falls were my favorite. Two of my coworkers were with me. We made many jokes about the falls looking like the entrance to Mordor, or perhaps even hell.
Genna, one of our photographers, shot photos of the lights. I’m writing more about the falls and other cool stuff in the North Cascades for a story on Sunday. You’ll get to see Genna’s great photos then. But, for now, here’s a super sketchy iPhone photo to give you a vague idea of how cool the falls are.
