EVERETT — The Boise Hawks scored five runs in the first two innings, then coasted to a 7-3 victory over the Everett AquaSox on Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The Hawks were all over Everett starting pitcher Lukas Schiraldi in the early going. Danny Canela crushed a two-run home run to right in the first. Then Boise rallied for three more in the second, with Charlie White’s RBI triple and a bases-loaded walk contributing to the damage.
Everett chipped away at Boise’s lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, but Justin Mara’s mammoth two-run home run in the eighth put the game out of reach for the Sox.
Four pitchers combined on a six-hitter for Boise (1-1 second half, 23-17 overall), striking out a Hawks season high 13 batters. Relievers Sam Wilson and Francisco Carrillo closed out the game with four hitless innings, fanning eight to prevent any hint of a comeback.
Corey Simpson hit his team-leading sixth homer to lead Everett (1-1, 12-28). Leoncio Munoz, who relieved Schiraldi in the second, did everything he could to keep the Sox in the game, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings and striking out six, but the hole proved too deep for Everett.
Autograph signing
AquaSox players are taking part in an autograph signing event Saturday at Britt Sports Cards in Arlington. First baseman/catcher Kyle Petty and catcher Adam Martin, both of whom were named Northwest League All-Stars on Thursday, are scheduled to be in attendance at the event, which runs from 10-11 a.m. AquaSox mascot Webbly will also be on hand. The event is free to attend, and paraphernalia is available for purchase to have signed.
Short hops
Everett added a new pitcher Thursday as right-hander Brett Ash joined the team from Peoria of the rookie Arizona League. Ash, a 23-year-old from Topeka, Kansas, was signed by the Seattle Mariners as a non-drafted free agent this year out of Washburn University. With Peoria Ash didn’t allow a run in four relief appearances, registering a win and two saves. … Utilityman Nate Tenbrink (back) and pitcher Logan Bawcom (oblique) have both completed their rehabilitation stints with Everett. The Class AAA players, who appeared in one game with the Sox on Tuesday, are expected to rejoin the Tacoma Rainiers. … Everett infielder Chris Mariscal is sidelined by a strained hamstring. He’s expected to be on the shelf for about a week.
