Pete Carroll on Marshawn Lynch’s continued absence, and other training camp notes

The Seahawks were back on the field after a day off. Well, most of them anyway. Marshawn Lynch continues his holdout, which this week starts getting a lot more expensive because the team can go after a prorated portion of his signing bonus.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Lynch’s continued holdout: “We’re not commenting about it. He’s not here, so we can’t comment about a guy who’s not here right now. I love this kid, I hope he’ll figure it out and it’ll all make sense and come to a resolution somewhere, but nothing more than that.”

General manager John Schneider also addressed Lynch’s situation during an appearance on ESPN, and said he wasn’t getting concerned with the holdout: “You know, no. Everybody loves Beast Mode. We love him and respect the guy. I think what he’s done in this community, for this franchise, is outstanding. It’s one of those deals where you can never get inside somebody’s head. We’re just going with our plan, and I know it’s cliché-ish, but next man up. We’ve had a plan in place here for a number of years, and we can’t veer from that plan for one person, because it’s the ultimate team sport.”

—As for those who were on the field, rookie Paul Richardson turned in what might have been the play of the day, blowing past Tharold Simon to get wide open for a 60-ish-yard touchdown catch from Terrelle Pryor. It’s hardly breaking news that the rookie receiver has speed, but it’s still impressive to watch him at full speed. Like Percy Harvin, he has that extra gear that makes him stand out even amongst some of the best athletes in the world.

“He continues to show,” Carroll said. “He’s really, really fast.”

—Newly signed right tackle Eric Winston worked mostly with the second-team offense, while rookie Justin Britt remained the starter. Carroll said Britt is showing signs of improvement, though he definitely had his hands full at times trying to deal with Cliff Avril when it was ones-on-ones Tuesday.

—The punt return competition remains an open battle, according to Carroll, though Earl Thomas continues to be the leader.

“It’s pretty wide open,” Carroll said. “Because Earl has had the most reps, in that sense he’d be first guy to go, but that’s it. From there it’s all wide open. This will be a really fun competition for us to watch. I don’t how it’s going to settle, but we’ve got good candidates. Percy’s really chomping at the bit, man, he wants that job. The first thing you want in a punt returner is a guy who wants to do it real bad, because it’s a difficult, challenging job, and both Earl and Percy are that way. I know Doug Baldwin’s ready to jump in too, and Sherm wants his turns. It’s a good side competition that’s going on that we’ll watch all the way throughout camp.”

—After Bobby Wagner left with a tight hamstring, Brock Coyle got some reps with the starters. The undrafted rookie likely would have to move ahead of Heath Farwell on the depth chart to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, and so far he has enjoyed a solid camp, including one good hit Tuesday on an off-balanced Christine Michael that put the running back on his back.

—Doug Baldwin had a nice touchdown catch, splitting two defenders at the goal line to cap a drive that saw the starting offense take on the starting defense.

And finally a shameless plug, if you want to hear me talk Seahawks (and a few other things) I played the role of Jerry Brewer on the Elise and Jerry Show on Sports Radio 950 KJR this morning:
