Seahawks TE Anthony McCoy suffers another apparent Achilles injury

Seahawks tight end Anthony McCoy was carted off the field Tuesday, and the fear is that for the second year in a row, McCoy suffered a serious Achilles injury.

Last year, McCoy tore his right Achilles during a May session of organized team activities and ended up missing the season on the injured reserve list. He worked his way back from that injury and was the favorite to earn the No. 3 tight end job on Seattle’s roster, but now Pete Carroll fears McCoy has suffered another serious setback.

“Early indication is he hurt is other Achilles,” said Carroll, who also coached McCoy at USC. “If it is what they think it is, it’s just a real heartbreaker. He worked so hard to get back and all, and if it was the same Achilles you might understand it, but we think it’s the other one. We’ll see what happens.”

Carroll was asked if the injury was believed to be serious, and said, “Yeah, it is.”

If McCoy is indeed lost for the year with another torn Achilles, the battle for third tight end spot is wide open with Cooper Helfet, RaShaun Allen and Morrell Presley all in the mix (Presley, who signed last week, is listed as a receiver, but played tight end in college and has been working with the tight ends since arriving at camp).

Guard James Carpenter and middle linebacker Bobby Wagner both left practice early, but Carroll indicated neither had any serious issues.

“His calf tightened up a little bit, so they just pulled him out early,” Carroll said of Carpenter. “Same with Bobby Wagner, he had a little hamstring thing that just kind of tightened up.”

Rookie linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis sat with an oblique injury, and on that too Carroll said, “It’s not a serious deal, but we just wanted to make sure we don’t push him too far too fast.”

Tackle Michael Bowie, who has been out since suffering a shoulder injury on the first day of camp, should be back tomorrow or the next day, Carroll said.

Also expected back soon is rookie receiver Kevin Noorwood, who has been sidelined with a sore foot that is related to an old injury from college.

“He’s going to jump back in maybe tomorrow or the next day,” Carroll said. “…We could have done him today, but we’re going to wait another day. I’m hoping tomorrow he’ll get back out. It’s an old injury related to a previous surgery, so we’re just trying to figure out if we can solve the problem of it. He’s got a sore foot, but there’s nothing structurally wrong, so it’s just a matter of getting him through it. He’s a tough guy, he wants to be there and all that, we’re holding him out right now.”

Linebacker O’Brien Schofield also sat out, but it was just a rest day, Carroll said.
