Seahawks waive/injure T Michael Bowie, plus other injury notes

The Seahawks’ signing of veteran tackle Eric Winston became a lot more significant Saturday. Not only did rookie Justin Britt leave practice early with a shoulder injury, the severity of which is not yet known, but Seattle also waived/injured tackle Michael Bowie, who coming into camp was expected to compete with Britt for the starting right tackle job.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll recently had downplayed the severity of Bowie’s shoulder injury, but on Saturday he announced that Bowie will need surgery and is out for the season. Bowie is expected to be out four to six months, and if he goes unclaimed on waivers, he’ll revert to injured reserve.

Bowie, a seventh-round pick out of Northeastern State, started eight games last season, playing primarily at right tackle in place of an injured Breno Giacomini. With Bowie out for the season, the Seahawks are expected to add tackle Cory Brandon, who was waived by Arizona on Friday. Brandon, who went undrafted out of Oklahoma in 2011, has spent time with Tampa Bay and Chicago before signing with the Cardinals this offseason.

As for Britt’s injury, Carroll didn’t have an update, but it’s worth noting that Britt stayed on the sideline and watched the rest of practice and wasn’t in any noticeable pain, so it’s quite possible it’s nothing significant.

Rookie safety Dion Bailey suffered an apparent ankle sprain in Saturday’s mock game. Carroll said initial X-rays were negative, but that they’re still gathering info on the injury.

Carroll said receiver Paul Richardson (shoulder) and defensive end Cassius Marsh (groin), who both were held out again Saturday, should return to practice Monday. It sounds like LT Russell Okung could be back early next week as well, while Carroll said LB Malcolm Smith (ankle) is likely a week away from returning and safety Kam Chancellor (hip) is “on the verge” of returning.

Defensive tackle Jesse Williams, who was placed on injured reserve Friday with a knee injury, hurt his other knee than the one that kept him sidelined for all of last season.

With the injuries piling up for Seattle’s rookies, fullback Kiero Small was the only member of the Seahawks’ 2014 draft class who was healthy enough to take part in the scrimmage once Britt left with his injury.
