Report: Miami freshman QB Olsen suspended after failed drug test

It seems Miami will be without redshirt freshman Kevin Olsen for at least one game this season.

Adam Kuperstein of WQAM-560, the Hurricanes’ flagship radio station, reported on Friday afternoon the quarterback will be suspended for at least one game after failing a drug test.

When reached by the Sun Sentinel via text message, a school official would not comment on the report.

This is not the first time Olsen has been suspended during his time at Miami. The quarterback was one of three players suspended last December ahead of Miami’s Russell Athletic Bowl loss to Louisville.

And though coaches praised his newfound maturity during spring camp, he’s had his share of troubles since signing with UM, including being charged with leaving the scene of a single-car accident in his hometown of Wayne, N.J. in June 2013.

Olsen, who was elevated to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart this past spring after projected starter Ryan Williams tore his ACL in April, was expected to be one of the top competitors for Miami’s quarterback job along with recently-arrived Jake Heaps.

Heaps, a fifth-year player who transferred to Miami from Kansas earlier this summer, also played at BYU and has appeared in more than 30 college games. He completed 128 of 261 passes for 1,414 yards with eight touchdowns, 10 interceptions and 23 sacks last season at Kansas.

Incoming freshmen Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier are the other two healthy quarterbacks on Miami’s roster and were expected to be dark horse candidates for Miami’s starting job, though that may change after Olsen’s suspension.

Williams meanwhile, has been optimistic about his return this season, initially targeting the Hurricanes’ Sept. 20 game at Nebraska, but Miami coach Al Golden said late last month at the ACC’s annual kickoff event that while Williams was making progress, there is no timeline for his return.
