EdCC president attends event at White House
Edmonds Community College president Jean Hernandez attended an event hosted by the White House on Aug. 12. Hernandez was among leading practitioners, researchers, and other higher education leaders exploring effective strategies to improve success for students in need of remediation. It was Hernandez’s second visit to the White House. In 2012, she served on a White House Panel discussing Girls in STEM.
New diversity officer at EvCCEverett Community College has hired María Peña as the college’s chief diversity officer, a new position created to lead the college’s efforts to create and sustain a climate of diversity and equity. Peña, of Mill Creek, brings 23 years of higher education experience to EvCC. Previously, she served as dean for student services and assistant to the president at Peninsula College in Port Angeles.
Group Health adds VPSue Kozik has joined Group Health as executive vice president and chief information officer. Kozik is responsible for leading Group Health’s information technology organization and is also heading up the cooperative’s efforts to bring together all its IT functions and teams. Most recently Kozik was senior vice president and CIO at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia.
Edmonds environmental firm hires staffEdmonds-based Landau Associates has added staff in its Snohomish County offices. Christel Olsen is a senior staff engineer in the Edmonds Permitting and Compliance group. Stephanie Renando is an environmental technician in the Edmonds office. Jeffery Whitman is a senior staff engineer in the Geotechnical group. The company also added Seethu Babu as a senior engineer in the Seattle office.
New board members for KSER
Four people have been elected to the KSER Foundation’s Board of Directors. The new board members are Alan Jacobson, branch manager of the Evergreen Branch of the Everett Public Library; Nina Martinez, a health care business consultant and chair of the Latino Civic Alliance; Robert Shoup, engineer; and Laurie Wheeler, owner of Maestra Communications. KSER 90.7 is an independent public radio station.
Edmonds accountant chosen executive chairwoman of state CPA group
Heather L. Fitzpatrick, CPA and a chartered global management accountant, is the new executive chair for the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Board of Directors for fiscal year 2015. Fitzpatrick is president and CEO of MarketFitz Inc., a management consulting company based in Edmonds.
New doctor hired at Premera
Dr. Shawn West has joined Premera in Mountlake Terrace as the medical director of provider engagement. West comes from Coordinated Care, where he served as chief medical director. In his new role, he will work closely with healthcare providers to improve quality for members. West is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine.
TalentWise appoints new president
Bothell’s TalentWise, Inc. has announced that its board of directors promoted Todd C. Owens, the company’s president and chief operating officer, to the position of chief executive officer. They have also elected him to the board for TalentWise. Owens succeeds William Kerr, who has been appointed executive chairman of TalentWise.

Fundraiser at Monroe restaurant benefits Housing Hope
Housing Hope held “An Evening at Adam’s for Monroe Family Village” on July 28 at Adam’s Northwest Bistro and Brewery in Monroe. The event was in support of the non-profit’s latest development, a 47-unit homeless and low-income housing project in Monroe. The event raised $10,600. All of Adam’s Bistro staff donated their time and service for the evening.

Kick-off celebration planned for Port clean-up project
The Port of Everett, in partnership with the Department of Ecology, will celebrate the kickoff of the final phase of the $6.5 million Everett Shipyard Cleanup project from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday near the 14th Street haul-out. Dessert and refreshments will be provided as well as a sand sculpture event.
Grand opening planned for new Everett yogurt shop
A new TCBY, The Country’s Best Yogurt, has opened in Everett Mall Plaza at 1405 SE Everett Mall Way, Suite D. A grand-opening event is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The store, owned by Neeshad Thakkar, will give away an iPad and a mountain bike during the event. Thakkar will also make a donation at 4 p.m. to the Boy &Girls Club of Snohomish County.
Chocolate shop in Langley celebrates opening
Sweet Mona’s Chocolate Boutique will celebrate the grand opening of its new location Saturday at 221 Second St., Suite 16, in Langley. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. everything in the store will be Buy One Get One Free. The event will also feature drawings for gifts and prizes and more.
Community groups can apply for surplus vans
A workshop at 9 a.m. Aug. 27 in the Community Transit Board Room will be held for groups interested in applying for one of the 10 passenger vans being donated to Snohomish County non-profit organizations as part of the Van GO program. Lynnwood tattoo shop plans fundraiser
Dragons of Heaven Tattoo will present RISE, a grand opening event to benefit the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. The event is at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Dragons of Heaven Tattoo Studio, 16108 Ash Way, Suite 104, in Lynnwood. Admission is a $5 donation. The public is invited.
Golfers, sponsors needed for tournament
The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce is looking for more golfers and sponsors for the David Stern Memorial Golf Classic, which honors the former Edmonds police chief and chamber president. Proceeds benefit Edmonds Chamber sponsored events, including: An Edmonds Kind of 4th, Edmonds Trick-or-Treat Night and other events. Workshop planned on the ‘Art of Liqueurs’
Instructor and award-winning distiller Ryan Hembree joins the Northwest Agricultural Business Center to present the first Puget Sound workshop on The Art of Liqueurs. Taste of Edmonds draws thousands, raises money for worthy causes
The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce has reported that the 32nd annual A Taste of Edmonds was a success. The three-day festival drew an estimated 75,000 people and local non-profit organizations and community groups received over $16,000 in support from proceeds raised by the event. About $6,600 was collected for the Boys &Girls Club, beating last year’s record by $600.
Everett contractor sponsors Air Force One detailer
Kirtley-Cole Associates sponsored Woodinville’s Craig MacKay of Clean Planet Detailing at an event earlier this month. As a member of an elite team of high-end detailers from across the country, MacKay detailed the original Air Force One presidential jet. Based in Everett, Kirtley-Cole is a general contractor, known for providing construction services to a diverse sector of construction types.
New tenant at Port of Everett’s Waterfront Center
The Port of Everett has signed a new five-year lease with Eagle Home Mortgage and renewed three additional leases for its Waterfront Center facility, bringing the building to 70 percent occupied. The Port’s Waterfront Center opened for business in 2011, and is designed for marine-related services, office and retail users that support and revitalize the Craftsman District.
Mattress City plans Seahawks promotion
Mattress City, a family-owned mattress and furniture store with locations in Woodinville, Everett, Marysville, and soon in Lynnwood, is offering a Kick Off -Pay Off promotion on purchases now through Sept. 3. For the Seahawks opening home game on Sept. 4 at CenturyLink, if the Hawks return the first kickoff they receive back for a touchdown, customers receive money back.
State: Sales tax revenues grew in 1st quarter
According to a quarterly report released by the Washington State Department of Revenue, the state’s taxable retail sales totals grew to $27.3 billion in the first quarter of 2014, recording a 4.9 percent increase over the same period in 2013. Retail trade, a subset of total taxable retail sales, rose 2.4 percent to $12.3 billion.
