MARYSVILLE — A roundabout is going in at the intersection of Highway 9 and 84th Street Northeast, and traffic is to be restricted and rerouted for more than a week.
Work was to start Thursday on a center island for the roundabout. The highway is expected to remain open for traffic in both directions. However, drivers cannot take any left turns at the intersection or cross the highway to stay on 84th Street. The restrictions are expected to remain in effect until Aug. 29.
Signs are to be posted for detours, according to the state Department of Transportation.
“In some cases, detours will add more than 10 miles to a route and drivers are encouraged to adjust their plans to account for the extra travel time,” according to the department.
The roundabout is replacing a stoplight at the intersection. The state hopes to complete the project by the end of the month.
There were 43 crashes at the intersection between 2007 and 2012, according to the state.
The roundabout is part of a $16.8 million road project on Highway 9 that includes adding a stoplight to the intersection of Highway 9 and 32nd Street Southeast in Lake Stevens.
