I hope we all reflect really hard on Eugene Robinson’s Tuesday column, “The ones left behind.” When will we ever learn?
Robinson’s column reminded me of testimony by the prominent psychologist Dr. Kenneth B. Clark presented to the Kerner Commission on Civil Disorders in 1968, 46 years ago.
Clark testified, “I read the report … of the 1919 riot in Chicago, and it is if I were reading the report of the investigating committee on the Harlem riot of ‘43, the report of the McCone Commission on the Watts riot.” Concluding, Clark said, “I must … in candor say to members of this Commission: It is a kind of Alice in Wonderland — with the same moving picture re-shown over and over again, the same analysis … the same recommendations, and the same inaction.”
When will we ever learn?
