EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox evened their current five-game series with the Eugene Emeralds at two games a piece with a 6-1 victory in Northwest League baseball action Friday night.
With the win, the Frogs (13-16) jumped ahead of Vancouver (13-17) — which lost to Boise on Friday — to move into second place in the NWL’s second-half North Division standings. Everett remained 1½ games behind Tri-City (14-14) after the Dust Devils win over Salem-Keizer.
Everett took control of Friday night’s game with its bats. Home runs by left fielder Phillips Castillo and designated hitter Kristian Brito, as well as doubles by Castillo, catcher Adam Martin and right fielder Corey Simpson paced the Frogs’ offense.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third, the Frogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Castillo led off with a double to right field. He advanced to third on a groundout by shortstop Jordan Cowan, but it looked as though he may be stranded there when center fielder Austin Cousino struck out swinging for the second out of the inning.
Third baseman Chris Mariscal walked to keep the inning alive and stole second with Martin at the plate. Martin then delivered a two-run double to left field that gave the AquaSox a 2-1 lead. Martin scored moments later on an RBI double by Simpson.
The AquaSox continued their offensive production in the bottom of the fourth inning, this time via the long ball. Brito led off the inning with a solo home run to center field to give Everett a 4-1 lead. Second baseman Andy Peterson followed by reaching base on a throwing error by Eugene starting pitcher Walker Weickel. Castillo knocked in Peterson with a two-run home run to left field, making it 6-1.
The Emeralds committed four errors in the game, but only Weickel’s error in the bottom of the fourth proved costly.
Castillo finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and Martin was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
