Seahawks acquire CB Marcus Burley in trade, and the cuts so far
What we do know is that the Seahawks have acquired cornerback Marcus Burley in a trade that sent a 2015 sixth-round pick to Indianapolis, a move announced by the Colts this afternoon.
That’s hardly a shocking move, as there was no clear-cut fifth CB on Seattle’s roster behind Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon. Phillip Adams and Akeem Auguste were the next logical picks, but neither did enough to cement their place on the team, hence the trade for Burley, a 5-10, 190-pound corner who went undrafted out of Delaware in 2013, and has spent time with the Jaguars, Eagles, Rams and Colts.
And speaking of Adams, he is one of the players who reportedly will be released according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Other cuts that have leaked out so far:
T Eric Winston (per ProFootballTalk.com). Winston is a solid veteran capable of playing both tackle positions, but in the end this likely came down to money. Rather than pay a veteran more than $1 million, all of which would have been guaranteed had he been on the Week 1 roster, who wouldn’t play barring a couple of injuries, the Seahawks can save a little money and go younger. Winston’s release could be good news for undrafted rookie tackle Garry Gilliam.
Though the Seahawks could always bring Winston back later if he doesn’t get picked up by another team, and doing so after Week 1 could save them money (similar to what they did with Clinton McDonald last year.
DE Benson Mayowa (per Rapoport). As good as Mayowa was in camp as a rookie, and even though he was on the roster last season, that move isn’t a surprise, as he was pretty clearly outplayed by O’Brien Schofield, and the two had pretty much the same role in Seattle.
WR Arceto Clark (per Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post). Another move that wasn’t surprising. Clark had a nice camp, but just had too many receivers ahead of him on the depth chart.
