PORT ORCHARD — The mother of the boy who brought a gun that fired and wounded a classmate at a Bremerton elementary school has been sentenced to 14 months behind bars.
The Kitsap Sun reports that Jamie Lee Chaffin was sentenced Friday in Kitsap County Superior Court. She initially faced third-degree assault charges, but was eventually prosecuted for unlawful possession of a firearm.
Her then-9-year-old son brought a gun to Armin Jahr elementary in his backpack in February 2012. The gun fired inside the backpack, critically wounding a classmate, Amina Kocer Bowman, 8. She survived after multiple surgeries and more than a month in the hospital.
The boy told investigators he had taken the gun from a dresser at the Allyn home of Chaffin’s boyfriend, Douglas Bauer. Chaffin did not have parental custody of the boy, who lived with his uncle.
