The summer of the peach

I am dubbing this the summer of the peach! We have had a steady supply of peaches in our kitchen since the end of July and, with the way this weather is going, we may get to keep slurping up these juicy fruits for a few more weeks (fingers crossed!).

On Labor Day we were lucky to be in West Richland, in Eastern Washington, a short hop away from Ray French Orchard. When we arrived a big white board sign let us know the peaches were .88/lb and Golden Delicious Apples were .75/lb. At those prices they were practically giving the fruit away – as long as you picked it yourself. So we did!

The peaches were so heavy on the trees they were falling everywhere including right into our hands at the slightest touch. I told Mister that we were only going to pick enough to eat for the week. That plan was completely abandoned when we reached our common sense quota after about 4 minutes of picking. When finally dragged ourselves away from the trees our haul of peaches weighed in at 20 pounds and our modest bucket of apples was another seven pounds of fruit.

We packed the fragile fruit into our car as gently as possible and hit the highway. It was such a great experience — you better believe we will head back for more of those velvety treats next summer!

These are some of my favorite recipes featuring peaches:

Blackberry-Peach Muffins

Cardamom Peach Cake

Fresh Peach and Rhubarb Sorbet

Oatmeal-Nectarine Pancakes

Rustic Peach-Raspberry Galette

Stone Fruit Cobbler
