Sometimes the fall season rolls up just in time to save the movie year, as quality-minded, awards-worthy films arrive after the summer blockbusters. Things are a little different this time.
For one thing, it’s already been a pretty good year for decent movies. The other twist is that the usually profitable summertime was seen as a letdown by Hollywood — which really means that everybody made money, but not as much money as in previous years.
So the studios could use a hit or two in the weeks before Thanksgiving. Will it be “Gone Girl,” the much-anticipated adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s popular novel? Or maybe Brad Pitt’s “Fury” will rescue the box office and settle World War II?
If you’re putting money down, bet on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar.” The “Dark Knight” director has had a golden touch lately, and his venture into outer space is breathlessly anticipated.
In short, there’s enough to get us through to the holiday season, which kicks off Nov. 21 with “Mockingjay — Part 1,” another section of the “Hunger Games” phenomenon. Let’s see what’s in the pipeline, and keep in mind that dates can change on a weekly basis.
