See the swifts: Each year around this time, thousands of Vaux’s swifts can be seen squeezing into a single chimney at the Wagner Center in Monroe. This year’s Swifts Night Out is Saturday, from 5 p.m. to dusk. There will be food, and docents will be available to answer questions about the birds. Read Sharon Wootton’s column for more.
Pumpkins fly: Put on your chain mail and head to the seventh annual Snohomish Pumpkin Hurl and Medieval Faire, Saturday and Sunday at Alexander Farm Corner, 42nd Street SE and Ebey Island Road, Everett. Roller derby: Tilted Thunder Rail Birds are back with hard-hitting banked-track roller derby action Saturday at Xfinity Arena (formerly known as Comcast Arena). The season’s last bout begins at 5 p.m. Tickets here.
Do the Puyallup: A little farther afield, the Washington State Fair in Puyallup is going on now, with special Sounder trains traveling from Everett the next two Saturdays, Sept. 13 and 20. For $16 ($11.25 for kids 6-18), you get round-trip Sounder fare and admission to the fair. Trains leave at 8:55 a.m. and return at either 6:30 or 8 p.m. Read our story for more info.
Car show: Vintage automobiles will be on display at the Stanwood Classic Car Show on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Stanwood Camano Senior Center parking lot. Along with the cars, there’s food and door prizes. A $10 meal ticket gets you breakfast, lunch and strawberry shortcake. More info here.
Classic dragsters: If you like your classic cars fast, the Arlington Drag Strip reunion and car show takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. More info here.
Touch a truck: Marysville brings out the heavy-duty rigs for kids on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Asbery Field, 1605 7th St. NE. Kids can honk the horns and kick the tires on garbage trucks, aid cars and more. More info here.
Pacific legends: The Flying Heritage Collection’s last free fly day of 2014 features the Grumman Hellcat and the North American B-25. The action starts at 11 a.m. Saturday. Visit flyingheritage.com for more info.
Art in the Park: Arlington’s Legion Park features fine arts and crafts this weekend. The show includes live music, food, beer and wine tasting. More info here.
Puppet show: Colorful characters will sing, dance and roller skate for kids as the Puppets Please Marionettes perform a pair of shows Saturday at the Everett Public Library. The first one is at 11 a.m. at the library’s main branch, 2702 Hoyt Ave., and the second is at 1 p.m. at the Evergreen Branch, 9512 Evergreen Way.
