EVERETT — A woman was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being badly burned Saturday by a grease fire.
The woman had been cooking on a stovetop when the contents of the pan she was using caught fire.
She tried to move the pan, but spilled the burning grease on herself, said Dave DeMarco, an acting battalion chief with the Everett Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched just before noon to the house on Vesper Drive in Everett.
The fire already had been put out by a roommate by the time they arrived.
The woman was taken to the hospital. Her condition was not immediately available.
Grease fires often can be easily extinguished, DeMarco said.
If it is contained in a pan, “the best way to put it out is to put the lid of the pan on and to snuff it out,” he said.
Or use a fire extinguisher, he said.
“The problem we have is when people try to move the pan outside and spill burning grease. They burn themselves and can even catch the building on fire,” DeMarco said.
