Scuttlebutt’s Hoptopia Imperial IPA takes silver in Japan

Hoptopia Imperial IPA from Everett’s Scuttlebutt Brewing was awarded the Silver Medal in the English Style IPA category at the International Beer Cup in Yokohama, Japan on Saturday.

Hoptopia was the only product Scuttlebutt entered and the silver medal was the highest medal awarded in the category.

“To win any medal, not to mention an international medal, is humbling and validation for all the hard work,” said Matt Stromberg, Scuttlebutt’s head brewer. “2014 has been a very good year for us!”

Considered the largest beer festival in Asia, the Great Japan Beer Festival judges 600 beers in 105 style categories from different countries. Attendance at this year’s festival exceeded 20,000.

Here’s a press release on the silver medal:

Scuttlebutt Takes Silver in Japan

Everett, WA — Scuttlebutt Brewing Company is proud to announce that its Hoptopia Imperial IPA was awarded the Silver Medal, in the English Style IPA category, at the International Beer Cup held in Yokohama, Japan.

Judging of 600 commercial beers in 105 style categories was conducted by 60 judges from 20 different countries on September 10th and 11th. The winners were announced on September 13th at the Great Japan Beer Festival, advertised as the largest Beer Festival in Asia.

The International Beer Cup was created in 1996 the Japanese Craft Beer Association, a nonprofit organization formed in 1994 after deregulation of the Japanese beer market. Scuttlebutt’s Hoptopia is constructed as an English Style IPA primarily using North American ingredients. Full bodied with a silky smooth mouth feel, pine and biscuit in the nose and a persistent earthy green bitterness throughout the whole experience. Hoptopia is 8% abv and 75 IBUs. It’s available year round in 12 and 22 oz bottles and on draft.

Scuttlebutt Brewing Company was started in 1996 by Phil and “Scuttle” Bannan. With roots firmly planted in Everett, Scuttlebutt’s products are now available in 21 states along with limited distribution in Canada and Japan.
