When reporter Bill Sheets moved on, this blog took a hiatus. We’re glad to bring it back.
Roads are important, whether we drive them or not. I rolled my eyes when I typed that. It’s cliche — because it’s also true.
There’s a chunk of pavement missing near our house, where the road meets the curb. Ruddy bricks peek out from under the familiar landscape of gray, a reminder of Everett’s past, when horses clip-clopped through the steam and ash of nearby mills, heading toward those engines of commerce or away from them, into the tall woods and toward the rivers for a long day of visiting. From dirt to brick to blacktop, roads have long helped communities across Snohomish County grow and connect with each other.
Street Smarts looks at all things paved — from the highway to the byway — as well as those soggy sections between landmasses. Cars. Buses. Ferries. Bicycles, too.
As a mom to two young children, expect to see this blog take frequent detours to the edges of the streets too. Sidewalks make up a bulk of our travels here in Everett, as they do for many others across the county.
We’ll cover major road projects, answer those burning questions about driving etiquette, grumble about gas prices. If you’re nice, I’ll let you give your two cents about roundabouts and red-light cameras.
So, send me your questions, your rants. Expect me to ask some questions of my own, too. (I’ll try not to rant.)
Here’s your first chance to help with future blog posts:
